Lathmar Holi 2027 in Barsana

The most famous Holi in India happens in a lane you can walk across in a minute, with lakhs of people trying to get into it. Here is how it goes, what the dates are, and how to see it without spending the day in a crush.

The week, day by day

  • Thursday 11 February 2027 · Basant Panchami
The forty days begin. Gulal is first offered at Shriji and the samaj turns to Holi.
  • Monday 15 March · Laddu Holi, Barsana
Nandgaon's invitation is accepted at Shriji. Samaj gayan fills the courtyard and laddus are thrown from the temple. Catching one is the point.
  • Tuesday 16 March (expected) · Lathmar Holi, Barsana
Nandgaon's huriyare cross the fields, stop at Peeli Pokhar, climb to Shriji, and come down to Rangeeli Gali where Barsana's huriyarin wait with lathis. Late afternoon into dusk.
  • Wednesday 17 March · Lathmar Holi, Nandgaon
Barsana returns the visit. Nand Bhavan's courtyard, the same game, Nandgaon's women on the sticks.
  • 18 to 20 March · Vrindavan and Gokul
Phoolon wali Holi at Banke Bihari on Rangbharni Ekadashi, Chhadi Mar Holi at Gokul, the widows' Holi in Vrindavan.
  • Sunday 21 March · Holika Dahan
    The fire, after dusk.
  • Monday 22 March · Rangwali Holi
Holi proper across Braj. Dauji Huranga at Baldeo around the 23rd.

Lathmar Holi falls on Phalgun Shukla Navami. Some calendars put 2027 on the 17th; the temple announces the day in February and we tell every booked guest the same hour.

Why stay in Barsana itself. Most visitors sleep in Vrindavan or Mathura, 40 km away, and reach Barsana after the roads are shut and the lanes are full. Our guests wake up ten minutes from Rangeeli Gali, see Laddu Holi at leisure, and have a rooftop to stand on when the lathis come out.
What it is

The story behind the sticks

Krishna and his friends came from Nandgaon to tease Radha and her Sakhis; the women of Barsana drove them off with sticks. Every year the men of Nandgaon come again, shields up, and the women of Barsana meet them in Rangeeli Gali. It is played, not fought, and it belongs to the two villages. Visitors watch.

Safety

What we do on the day

  • Groups stay small and every group has a Barsana local with a phone that works in the crowd
  • We fix a meeting point and an exit before anyone enters Rangeeli Gali
  • Women-only and family viewing spots away from the lane; police run anti-harassment squads but a rooftop is better
  • No one in our groups goes near the lathis. Watching is the tradition for visitors; the game belongs to Barsana and Nandgaon
Bring
  • A white kurta you are willing to lose, and clothes for after
  • Glasses or goggles for the gulal, and a scarf
  • Phone in a zip pouch; cash in small notes
  • Coconut oil on skin and hair the night before, for the colour to come off
