Money in Barsana

Barsana runs on cash and UPI. There is no money changer within 40 km, three bank branches keep office hours, and the ATMs sometimes sleep. Here is how to arrive with the right money, and what we do for guests coming from abroad.

Paying

UPI first, cash second, cards last

The ropeway counter, the chai stall, the rickshaw and the poshak shop all take UPI. Cards work at the bigger hotels and almost nowhere else. Keep Rs 10, 20 and 50 notes for prasad, the shoe stand and the aarti thali.

Cash

Withdraw before the last 15 km

Barsana's ATMs are few and festival days empty them by noon. Use a bank ATM in Mathura, Kosi Kalan or at the airport, and arrive with what you need.

From abroad

Exchange handled on the way in

We are not a money changer; only RBI-authorised dealers may exchange currency. We take you to one on the way from Delhi, check the rate first, and set you up with UPI so you need little cash at all.

Money exchange, done honestly

The law is simple: only RBI-authorised money changers may exchange currency, and there are none in Barsana. We are not one either. What we do is the part that actually saves you money and time.

  • Change on the way in. The nearest authorised changers are in Vrindavan by the ISKCON temple, open until about 9 PM, and in Mathura. Our cab from Delhi stops there. We check the day's rate before you hand over notes and make sure you leave with a receipt.
  • Skip most cash with UPI One World. A prepaid UPI wallet for foreign visitors: set up at the Delhi airport kiosk against your passport and visa, loaded from your foreign card, with the unused balance refunded to the card. Once it is on your phone, every QR code in Barsana takes your money. We walk you through it when we meet you.
  • Use the airport ATM, not Barsana's. If you prefer cash from a card, draw it at a bank ATM at the airport or in Mathura. Expect your bank's foreign withdrawal fee on top.
  • If you are stuck. Western Union and similar transfer counters are in Mathura, not Barsana. Call us and we will get you to one the same day.
Rates

Where the margin hides

Airport counters keep the largest margin on the mid-market rate. Authorised changers in Vrindavan and Mathura are better, and banks are slower but fair. Tell us the day before and we will say where to change and roughly what to expect.

What it costs

Nothing extra

Exchange help and UPI set-up are part of any darshan day, Holi trip or stay booked with us. A cab to a changer on its own is the usual cab fare, in writing.

We do not

Touch your currency

We never take foreign notes from you, never quote our own rate, and never send you to an unlicensed shop. If anyone in Barsana offers to change money in a back room, say no.

Carry

What to have in your pocket

Rs 10, 20 and 50 notesA UPI app that worksOne card for the hotelPassport copy for check-inThe changer's receiptRs 2,000 for a festival day

A family of four on a quiet day spends under Rs 1,500 in cash in Barsana: prasad, the shoe stand, a rickshaw, tea. On Holi or Radha Ashtami, double it and keep it in two pockets.

Questions
Can we pay you in dollars or pounds?

No. We take UPI, bank transfer, or a card through a payment link. We do not handle foreign currency.

Will our guest house take a card?

The larger hotels do. Guest houses, homestays and dharamshalas take cash or UPI. We tell you which when we send the options.

Is there a money changer in Barsana?

No. The nearest authorised changers are in Vrindavan and Mathura, about 45 km away. We stop there on the way in.

Do NRIs need any of this?

An NRI with an Indian bank account and UPI needs nothing. An NRI without one is in the same position as any foreign visitor, and UPI One World is the easiest fix.

Tell us your dates · अपनी तारीख़ बताइए

Tell us when you land; we sort the money before the darshan

Say when you are coming and how many of you there are. You get two or three options with real distances to Shriji and a fixed price. No surge on festival days.

  • Reply within a day, usually within hours
  • Stays 10% below the walk-in rate when booked through us
  • A local lead with every group on festival days
  • No VIP darshan promises, because there is no such thing at Shriji
