Every place in Barsana has a story

Barsana is Vrishbhanupur, the town of Radha Rani's father, and the hill she grew up on. The town's places are told as her pastimes. These are the stories as Braj tells them, the way our guides tell them on the road.

The hills

Brahma's four heads

Barsana sits on two hills, the long pale one called Brahma hill and the dark one called Vishnu hill. Braj says Brahma asked Krishna for a place from which he could watch his pastimes forever and was told to become a hill at Vrishbhanupur; its four peaks are his four heads. They are Bhanugarh, where Shriji stands; Maangarh, of Radha's maan; Dangarh, of the dan leela; and Vilasgarh, of play.

Bhanugarh

Shriji, the Ladli Lal temple

Tradition says Krishna's great-grandson Vajranabh first installed Radha and Krishna here five thousand years ago. The deities were lost in time and found again by Narayan Bhatt in the sixteenth century; the temple that stands today is dated 1675 and credited to Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha. Ladli means beloved daughter, Lal beloved son, so the temple is Ladli Lal: Radha with Krishna, in her own house.

Peeli Pokhar

The yellow pond

Across the road from the temple steps. When Yashoda, Krishna's mother, came to see the girl her son would marry, she rubbed turmeric on Radha's hands as the custom was. Shy, Radha washed her hands in this pond, and the water turned gold. It is called Peeli Pokhar, the yellow pond, to this day.

Gahvar Van

The forest of caves

The forest that wraps around Bhanugarh hill, with Krishna Kund in it, where Radha bathed and the two played in the water. The Barsana parikrama runs through Gahvar Van; on Ekadashi and Purnima mornings you walk it in company. Ramesh Baba's Maan Mandir trust has its home here and has planted and protected it for decades.

Sankari Khor

The dan leela

A narrow pass where the hills meet, on the way to Nandgaon. Here Krishna and the cowherd boys set themselves up as toll collectors and stopped Radha and her Sakhis carrying pots of curd and butter, demanding tax. The argument is the point; the Sakhis never paid. The Dan Garh peak takes its name from it.

Maan Garh

Radha's maan

Maan is the lover's sulk, the turning away that has to be coaxed. On this peak Radha withdrew in anger and Krishna came to plead; the temple on top is Maan Mandir. Below it is Mor Kutir, where Krishna danced as a peacock and Radha as a peahen until the anger broke.

Kirti Mandir

A mother and a child

Radha's mother is Kirti Maiya, her father Vrishbhanu. At Kirti Mandir in Rangeeli Mahal the deity is the child Radha in her mother's lap; the temple was opened in 2019 by Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat. Vrishbhanu's own palace stands at the foot of the Shriji steps, with a Brahma temple beside it to greet whoever climbs.

Prem Sarovar

The sarovar of love

On the road between Barsana and Nandgaon, a lake that tradition fills with Radha and Krishna's tears, shed when they could not bear to part. Between the two towns, between her home and his, it is the place our guides stop longest.

Radha Kushal Bihari

The Jaipur temple

Half a kilometre from Shriji, built by a Rajasthan king after Radha Rani appeared to him in a dream and told him that a small shrine on this spot was her home. He built the temple around it, in the Rajasthani style, which is why Barsana calls it the Jaipur Mandir.

Nandgaon

Across the fields

From the top of Bhanugarh you can see Nandishvar hill, 8 km away, where Nanda settled and Krishna grew up. Barsana and Nandgaon are one story in two villages, which is why the men of Nandgaon come to Barsana for Lathmar Holi and the men of Barsana go back the next day.

The parikrama

Walking Barsana

The Barsana parikrama goes around the hills through Gahvar Van, past Krishna Kund, Peeli Pokhar, Vrishbhanu's palace and the town's temples, and up to Shriji. Allow three hours on foot, early. Our guides walk it with you and tell each place as you reach it.

Walks and tours

Beyond Barsana

Govardhan, Radha Kund, Kusum Sarovar

Govardhan hill is about 20 km, Radha Kund 18 km, Kusum Sarovar on the way. Nandgaon and Kokilavan are closer. A two-day plan covers Barsana properly and these as well; we build it around the afternoon closures.
