Saints and sadhus · बरसाना के संत

The people who keep Barsana

A pilgrimage town is only as alive as the people serving in it. Barsana has been found, rebuilt and defended by saints more than once. These are the ones every Barsana wala will tell you about, and where their work still goes on.

ना

Narayan Bhatt Goswami

Sixteenth century · the Vrajacharya · samadhi at Unchagaon

A disciple in the line of Gadadhara Pandit, he walked the twelve forests of Braj, identified the places of Radha and Krishna's pastimes, found deities that had been lost, and wrote the Vraja Bhakti Vilasa, the guidebook pilgrims still follow. Braj calls him the Vrajacharya. The deities of Shriji are among those he recovered. His samadhi is in Unchagaon, Lalita Sakhi's village, a mile from the Barsana steps, and is the first stop on our Sakhi circuit.

र

Ramesh Baba of Maan Mandir

1938 to 6 October 2026 · Padma Shri 2019 · Maan Garh and Gahvar Van

He came to Barsana as a young renunciate about sixty years ago, when Maan Mandir on Maan Garh was a ruin on a hill that dacoits used, and never left. He gave satsang three times a day, took no disciples, and turned a sankirtan ashram into the force that restored more than thirty of Braj's kunds, planted its hills, led the 2009 fast that stopped the mining of the Braj hills, and built a goshala that shelters tens of thousands of cows. The Radha Rani Braj Yatra, the free 84 kos pilgrimage he started, has run every year for about twenty five years. He passed away in Barsana on 6 October 2026, at 88. Maan Mandir Seva Sansthan continues the daily sankirtan, the goshala and the Braj work; its head office is in Gahvar Van.

कृ

Jagadguru Kripalu Ji Maharaj

1922 to 2013 · Rangeeli Mahal, completed 1996 · Kirti Mandir, 2019

Declared the fifth Jagadguruttam by the Kashi Vidvat Parishat in 1957 and the founder of Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat, he made Barsana one of his three main centres. Rangeeli Mahal, his ashram here, has a satsang hall painted with the pastimes of Radha and Krishna, gardens, and since 2007 a free charitable hospital. Kirti Mandir, with the child Radha in her mother's lap, was opened within it on 10 February 2019. Satsang and kirtan continue daily under the Parishat.

गो

The Goswamis of Shriji

The sevayat families of the Radha Rani temple

The temple is served by Goswami families who hold the daily seva by turn: waking the deities, dressing them, offering bhog, singing the samaj gayan in the evening, and running the great days, Radha Ashtami and the Holi week, when lakhs climb the hill. Laddu Holi and Lathmar Holi are their festivals before they are anyone's. Our guides know these families, which is why seva booked through us is done the way the temple does it, and why we will never sell you VIP darshan: there is none to sell.

Satsang and sankirtan · सत्संग

Where to sit and listen

  • Maan Mandir, Maan Garh: daily naam sankirtan and satsang; the morning Prabhat Pheri through the lanes; Bhiksha Utsav; free prasad. The climb is worth it for the kirtan alone
  • Rangeeli Mahal: JKP's satsang hall, kirtan and Kirti Mandir darshan; large utsavs on Radha Ashtami and in the Holi week
  • Shriji, in the evening: the Goswamis' samaj gayan, the sung tradition of the temple. Stand at the back and listen
  • Gahvar Van on Ekadashi and Purnima: the parikrama is a moving satsang; join it at dawn

Tell us what you are looking for and we will say which of these fits your dates. Timings for satsang are set by the ashrams and change with the utsav calendar; we confirm them the day before.

Respect

Meeting sadhus in Barsana

  • Ask before photographing a sadhu, and accept a no
  • Dakshina is an offering, not a fee. Give it quietly, and give to the ashram's seva where there is one
  • Touch the feet if you wish; do not block the path or the darshan line to do it
  • Someone offering special darshan, a private audience, or a blessing for a price at the temple gate is not a sadhu. Walk on. Our guide handles this for you
  • In the Holi week the ashrams are full; satsang moves to the big halls and the courtyards
Tell us your dates · अपनी तारीख़ बताइए

Come for the satsang, we will arrange the rest

Say when you are coming and how many of you there are. You get two or three options with real distances to Shriji and a fixed price. No surge on festival days.

  • Reply within a day, usually within hours
  • Stays 10% below the walk-in rate when booked through us
  • A local lead with every group on festival days
  • No VIP darshan promises, because there is no such thing at Shriji
